How to Measure Your Wheel

How to Measure a Wheel for the Correct Replacement

Measure the tire, hub, and bore to find a replacement wheel that fits your equipment correctly.

Finding the correct replacement wheel starts with accurate measurements. Tire size alone may not be enough. You should also check the wheel’s outside diameter, outside width, hub length, bore size, and hub position before selecting a replacement.

What You Will Need

  • Tape measure, ruler, or caliper (for more percise measurements)
  • Your existing wheel
  • Pen or pencil
  • Notepad or phone to record your measurements

Step 1: Measure the Outside Diameter

Measure straight across the center of the tire from one outside edge to the other.

Step 2: Measure the Outside Width

Measure across the widest part of the tire from one outside edge to the other.

Step 3: Measure the Hub Length

Measure the complete hub length from the outside of one bearing or bushing to the outside of the bearing or bushing on the opposite side.

Tip: If your tape measure is too wide to fit through the bearing or bushing, place a pen or pencil through the hub. Mark the length, remove it, and then measure between the marks.

Step 4: Measure the Inside Diameter of the Bore

Measure the inside diameter, also called the I.D., of the center bore, bearing, or bushing opening. A caliper will provide the most accurate measurement.

What Tire Size Do I Need?

Check the sidewall of your existing tire for the tire size number. Common examples include:

  • 4.10-3.50-4
  • 10x3
  • 13x.5.00-6

If the tire size is worn off or cannot be found, use the outside diameter and outside width measurements to help identify the correct replacement.

What Bearing or Bushing Size Do I Need?

Measure the inside diameter of the bearing or bushing on your existing wheel.

You can also measure the outside diameter of the axle where the wheel will be mounted. The bearing or bushing opening must match the axle diameter.

What Hub Length Do I Need?

Measure from the outside of the bearing or bushing on one side of your existing wheel to the outside of the bearing or bushing on the opposite side.

Do not measure only the width of the rim. The complete hub length determines how the wheel fits on the axle.

Do I Need a Centered or Offset Hub?

Centered Hub

A centered, or symmetrical, hub extends approximately the same distance from both sides of the wheel. The wheel can typically be mounted in either direction.

Offset Hub

An offset hub extends farther from one side of the wheel than the other. The direction of the offset affects how the wheel must be mounted or installed.

Make sure the replacement wheel has the same hub position as your existing wheel.

Before Ordering

Compare all your measurements with the specifications listed on the product page. Two wheels with the same tire size may have different hub lengths, bore sizes, bearings, bushings, or hub positions. For any futher assitance feel free to give us a call and we'd be more than happy to help!
